Does TRT actually help with deep sleep and recovery or is it making my insomnia worse?

Asked in r/trt · Answered by the HeydayMD team ·

I have been on TRT for about three months now and while my gym recovery is better, I feel like I am waking up more often during the night. I was hoping the therapy would help me get more deep sleep, but my wearable tracker shows my recovery scores are actually trending down. Has anyone else experienced this or does it eventually level out?

The short answer

While many men report improved energy levels on TRT, the relationship between testosterone and sleep is complex and highly individualized. Research suggests that optimizing testosterone can improve overall sleep architecture and REM cycles, but excessive dosages can sometimes lead to sleep fragmentation or exacerbate underlying issues like sleep apnea. At HeydayMD, we focus on finding the precise dosage that balances hormonal health with restorative rest to ensure you are actually recovering at night. If you are struggling with sleep while on therapy, our clinical team can help adjust your protocol and provide personalized guidance to maximize your deep sleep phases.
