Does intermittent fasting affect TRT results or tank your testosterone levels?

Asked in r/Testosterone · Answered by the HeydayMD team ·

I've been on TRT for about six months and I'm thinking about starting a 16:8 intermittent fasting schedule to help drop some body fat. I'm worried that fasting might mess with my hormone levels or make my TRT less effective. Has anyone here tried combining the two, and did you notice any changes in your energy or blood work?

The short answer

Intermittent fasting can be a great tool for metabolic health, but prolonged caloric restriction can sometimes lead to a temporary dip in natural testosterone production or an increase in SHBG, which binds up free testosterone. However, for those already on TRT, fasting typically won't lower your exogenous testosterone levels, though it can significantly improve insulin sensitivity and body composition. It is important to ensure you are still hitting your protein targets during your eating window to maintain muscle mass while on therapy. At HeydayMD, our clinical team helps patients balance their lifestyle habits like fasting with their hormone protocols to ensure they are getting the best possible results.
