Does starting TRT actually make sleep apnea worse? Looking for advice.

Asked in r/trt · Answered by the HeydayMD team ·

I'm considering starting TRT for my low energy, but I've heard it might make my snoring and sleep apnea worse. Has anyone experienced this or found a way to manage both?

The short answer

Research suggests that testosterone replacement therapy can potentially worsen existing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or contribute to its development in some men, likely by altering the body's respiratory drive or upper airway muscle tone. While TRT offers significant benefits for energy and metabolism, it is crucial to screen for sleep disorders before and during treatment to ensure safety. At HeydayMD, our clinicians prioritize a comprehensive health assessment, including sleep quality monitoring, to tailor your protocol and manage any potential side effects effectively. If you have diagnosed sleep apnea, we work with you to ensure your CPAP or other treatments are optimized alongside your TRT regimen.

Every body is different. A licensed provider can look at your own labs and symptoms.
