Welcome to HeydayMD Health Talk. I'm your host, and today we're talking about why you might be waking up soaking wet in the middle of the night.

Picture this... it is three in the morning and you wake up with your shirt completely soaked through.

The sheets are damp... your pillow feels like it was left out in the rain.

You throw off the covers to cool down and eventually fall back asleep... only for it to happen again before your alarm goes off.

You might blame the thermostat... but the thermostat hasn't changed.

If this is happening two... three... or maybe five nights a week... you aren't alone.

Night sweats in men are way more common than most guys realize... and they are frequently linked to hormonal changes.

We usually associate hot flashes with women going through menopause... but men have their own version of this temperature trouble.

The difference is... guys rarely talk about it.

So... what is actually going on?

Think of your body as having an internal thermostat controlled by a part of your brain called the hypothalamus.

It tries to keep your core temperature in a narrow window... usually between ninety-seven point seven and ninety-nine point five degrees Fahrenheit.

But that thermostat doesn't work alone... it is packed with receptors for your hormones.

When your hormone levels shift... the thermostat can malfunction.

It triggers a sweat response even when your body temperature is perfectly normal.

The sweat is real... but the overheating is actually just a glitch in the system.

One of the biggest culprits here is low testosterone.

Testosterone helps set that internal thermostat... and when levels drop... your brain becomes way more sensitive to minor temperature changes.

It starts triggering cooling responses... like sweating... at much lower thresholds than it used to.

Now... let's look at the numbers.

Testosterone levels in men typically decline by about one to two percent every year starting around age thirty.

By the time you hit forty-five... your total testosterone might be twenty to forty percent lower than it was in your twenties.

Even if your labs come back in that broad... quote-unquote... normal range... that decline can be enough to mess with your internal cooling system.

And night sweats rarely happen by themselves.

Are you also feeling persistent fatigue even after a full night of sleep?

A decreased sex drive?

Maybe some brain fog or a lack of motivation?

If you are seeing those signs along with the night sweats... low testosterone should be high on your list of suspects.

Then there is cortisol... your primary stress hormone.

Normally... cortisol should be at its lowest point at night so your body can rest.

But if you are chronically stressed... those levels stay high.

High cortisol does two things... it directly activates your sweat glands... and it actually suppresses your testosterone production.

It is a nasty feedback loop... stress raises cortisol... cortisol lowers testosterone... and suddenly you are sweating through your sheets.

We also have to talk about sleep apnea.

Research shows that nearly one in three men with obstructive sleep apnea experience night sweats.

When your airway collapses and your oxygen drops... your body goes into a fight-or-flight response.

That surge of adrenaline spikes your heart rate and kicks your sweat glands into overdrive.

Plus... sleep apnea ruins the deep sleep you need to produce testosterone... which just makes the hormonal side of things even worse.

There are a few other things to keep in mind too.

An overactive thyroid can rev up your metabolism and make you sweat day and night.

Low blood sugar... or nocturnal hypoglycemia... can also cause profuse sweating and a feeling of anxiety when you wake up.

Even certain medications... like antidepressants... blood pressure meds... or even over-the-counter fever reducers... can be the trigger.

So... what do you do about it?

The first step is getting the right data.

You want to look at your total and free testosterone... your morning cortisol levels... and your thyroid markers like T-S-H and free T-three.

Checking your fasting glucose and A-one-C is also a smart move to rule out blood sugar issues.

The bottom line is that you don't have to just "deal with it" or keep blaming the air conditioner.
