Two Paths
When exploring TRT, you face a fundamental choice: go through your primary care physician or use a specialized online clinic. Both lead to the same medication, but the experience, cost, and quality of care differ substantially.
Primary Care Experience
Your PCP knows your medical history and insurance may cover some costs. However, many primary care physicians are uncomfortable prescribing TRT, unfamiliar with optimal dosing, or oppose hormone therapy for anything other than severe hypogonadism. Lab panels may be basic. Monitoring frequency often falls below guidelines.
Many men report being told their levels are normal in the low-normal range, prescribed gel without discussing options, given a standard dose without individualization, and monitored infrequently.
Online Clinic Experience
Online TRT clinics specialize in hormone optimization. Providers evaluate low testosterone daily. Protocols follow current evidence. Labs are comprehensive. Monitoring is regular. Medication ships to your door. The tradeoff: no full medical history unless you provide it, insurance typically does not cover it, and quality varies between clinics.
Cost Comparison
With insurance, TRT through your doctor may cost $50-150/month. Without insurance, expect $200-400/month. Online clinics range from $99-250/month with everything bundled. Total cost is often comparable, with online clinics providing more consistent monitoring.
Which Is Better
If your PCP is knowledgeable about TRT and committed to regular monitoring, that relationship has value. If they dismiss your symptoms or provide minimal follow-up, a specialized clinic will provide better care. Many men use both: an online clinic for TRT and their PCP for general health.
