Protein intake for body recomposition vs. pure weight loss on TRT?

Asked in r/Testosterone · Answered by the HeydayMD team ·

I've been on TRT for a few months and want to optimize my nutrition. Should my daily protein target look different if I'm trying to recomp versus just cutting weight?

The short answer

When optimizing body composition on TRT, protein targets typically range between 1.0 to 1.2 grams per pound of lean body mass to support muscle retention and growth, whereas pure weight loss can often be managed effectively around 0.8 to 1.0 grams per pound. Because testosterone enhances nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, adequate intake is essential to maximize your metabolic rate and recovery without burning out. At HeydayMD, our clinical team works with you beyond just managing your hormone levels, offering tailored nutrition and lifestyle guidance to ensure your diet aligns with your specific fitness goals.

Every body is different. A licensed provider can look at your own labs and symptoms.
